# Offer discounts on recurring memberships

Entice guests to become members by offering discounts like short term sign-up offers, or indefinite discounts on membership products.

A **Recurring membership discount** is a discount type that allows venues to set up a percentage or fixed-amount discount across a specified amount of billing cycles on recurring memberships.

You can offer discounts on memberships that:

- Apply for a fixed-duration (a certain number of billing cycles).
- Apply for the life of the membership (every billing cycle).

The discounts can be either:

- A fixed rate (eg $5 off)
- A percentage (10% off)

This flexible way to apply discounts to memberships unlocks uses like **sign-up intro offers** that apply for only a few billing cycles, **permanent discounts** for seniors and many more. This applies to both group and individual membership products.

> [!WARNING]
> HQ venues can create recurring discounts to managed venues for use in online checkout and POS.

## How does it work?

The setup flow mirrors the normal discount codes setup with setting availability and purchase limits and discount type. When the membership discount type is selected it provides you with the option to specify the duration (fixed or indefinite).

> [!NOTE]
> To learn how to set up a discount code for a fixed rate see the guide [Create a fixed amount discount code](/v1/docs/create-a-fixed-amount-discount-code). If you want to learn how to set up a percentage based discount code see the guide [Create a percentage discount code](/v1/docs/create-a-percentage-discount-code).

First, select the type of discount you want to offer (either percentage, or fixed-rate) and create a new discount code:

1. From Venue Manager, go to **Products**, **Discount codes** and **Create a discount code**.
2. Enter the name and select the discount type.
3. In the **Products** section, select **Recurring memberships**.
4. Use the product drop-down to select which membership products to apply it to.

5. Then, choose the discount duration. Choose between:
  - **Fixed duration**: a fixed number of cycles (eg first 2 recurring payments).
  - **Indefinite**: every payment for the lifetime of the membership.

6. Enter the rest of the discount details, like availability and select additional options that apply to your discount type.
7. Select **Save**.

> [!WARNING]
> Once saved, the discount type, value and duration are locked. Existing products on the discount can't be removed (new ones can be added). This is deliberate as it prevents any active membership from being modified mid-billing-cycle.

## Example: set up a membership intro offer

A membership intro offer discount works by setting up a recurring membership discount with a fixed duration of the first few billing cycles.

In the following example, a venue is offering 30% off for 3 months on a monthly Adult jump pass.

To set this up:

1. In Venue Manager, go to **Products** and **Discount codes**.
2. Select the **Create a discount code** button.
3. Add a discount name like: *Intro offer: 30% off for 3 months*.
4. Select **Percentage** in the **Discount type** field.
5. Enter **30** in the **Value** field (%).
6. Select **Recurring memberships** in **Products**.
7. Use the drop-down list to select the monthly Adult jump pass product.
8. In **Discount duration**, select **Fixed duration** and enter **3** in the billing cycles field.
9. Set **Availability** and **Additional options** and select **Save**.

## How to redeem a membership discount

Now that you've created an offer to entice guests to become members you can apply the membership discount at POS and online checkouts.

### Online checkout

Share the code directly with guests so they can use these at the checkout, or you can create a discount URL. If the discount has an auto-apply URL, guests land on the page with the discount already attached.

> [!NOTE]
> To learn more, see the guide [Share a discount with a checkout link](/v1/docs/share-a-discount-with-a-checkout-link).

### POS

In the cart, search for the recurring discount by name or code and apply it to the membership; the discount line, payment schedule, and minimum commitment update on the payment screen. You can apply more than one recurring discount to the same membership in a single transaction in POS.

> [!NOTE]
> To learn more, see the guide [Redeem discount codes or apply custom discounts at POS](/v1/docs/sell-items-and-redeem-discounts-and-memberships-at-pos#h_e002f2f1-1d14-4a1f-98cf-f534e648d5a4).
