While session passes support all rule types, other product types have specific restrictions depending on their setup. > [!NOTE] > To create or manage price rules, staff need both the **Can edit products** and **Can manage price rules** permissions. ## Which products each rule type supports | Rule type | Session pass | Standard pass | Package | Party package | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | [Quantity-based](/v1/docs/create-a-quantity-based-price-rule) | Yes | Yes | Yes, single-pass only | No | | [Time-based](/v1/docs/create-a-time-based-price-rule) | Yes | Yes, by day only | Yes, single-pass only | Yes | | [Early bird](/v1/docs/create-an-early-bird-price-rule) | Yes | Yes | Yes, single-pass only | Yes | | [Capacity-based](/v1/docs/create-a-capacity-based-price-rule) | Yes | No | Yes, with a session pass | Yes | - **By day only:** Allows daily price variations (eg weekday vs. weekend). Standard passes don't support time-of-day pricing (eg morning vs. afternoon) because they lack fixed start times. - **Single-pass only:** Applies to packages that contain a single standard or session pass, with tier pricing setting the price for that pass. If you're using a capacity-based rule, this must be a session pass. - **Packages and party packages:** Tier pricing applies strictly to the pass or party ticket. Extra inclusions (eg food, drinks, merchandise) remain the same price across all tiers. - **Unsupported combinations ("No"):** A rule type cannot be used if product mechanics prevent it. For example, party packages are sold as a single bundle (no individual tickets to count for quantity rules), and standard passes have no scheduled sessions (nothing to measure session capacity). ## Unsupported product setups Price rules cannot be applied to: - Recurring passes - Memberships - Multi-pass products - Stock and merchandise (eg food, beverages, retail items) - Gift cards Price rules won't apply if your product setup includes any of the following: - **Group ticket variations on quantity-based rules:** Variations priced as a single bundle (eg "Admit 4") cannot be counted per individual ticket. ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/23700755-951c-4b69-8afe-ec8b33c6c689/Images/Documentation/image(66).png) - **Discounted consecutive sessions:** Price rules cannot be applied to session passes (or packages containing session passes) that have consecutive sessions enabled. If a price rule is already applied, the consecutive sessions option is disabled automatically. ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/23700755-951c-4b69-8afe-ec8b33c6c689/Images/Documentation/image(65).png) - **Missing resources for capacity rules:** Capacity-based rules require the session pass ticket variations to have assigned resources to calculate fullness. ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/23700755-951c-4b69-8afe-ec8b33c6c689/Images/Documentation/image(67).png) ## One rule per product A product can run **one price rule at a time**, but you can assign the same rule to as many products as you like. Choose the rule that matches your primary pricing trigger: quantity, time of day, booking lead time or how full a session is. You can switch to a different rule whenever your strategy changes. ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/23700755-951c-4b69-8afe-ec8b33c6c689/Images/Documentation/image(63).png) ## Where price rules apply - **Quantity-based, time-based, and early bird rules:** Apply automatically across all sales channels. - **Capacity-based rules:** Allow you to select specific channels. ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/23700755-951c-4b69-8afe-ec8b33c6c689/Images/Documentation/image(68).png) For details on standard rates per channel and handling post-booking modifications, see [Which sales channels a price rule applies to](/v1/docs/price-rules-sales-channels). ## What HQ controls and what your venue controls For multi-venue accounts, HQ can create and manage every price rule type centrally, including capacity-based, to keep pricing consistent across locations. **HQ & venue permissions** - **HQ price rules:** Staff working in the HQ account can create and manage group-wide rules for all venues. - **Local price rules:** Staff working in a managed venue can create and manage rules specific to their venue. - **Locking HQ rules:** HQ administrators can deselect **Can change price rules on HQ products** (**Venues** *>* **Permissions**) to prevent venues from changing or removing HQ-assigned rules. See [Create and manage HQ venue permissions](/v1/docs/create-and-manage-hq-venue-permissions). Staff must have both the **Can edit products** and **Can manage price rules** [permissions](/v1/docs/permissions-by-feature-and-role) in the account where they are working. | Setting | HQ | Managed venue | | --- | --- | --- | | Tiers and rule settings in an HQ price rule | Creates and manages in HQ | View-only | | Tier prices for each variation included in an HQ product | Sets default prices | Edits locally | | Dates in a custom date group (such as school holidays, in a time-based rule) | Sets the dates. Can select **Allow managed venues to override** on any group | Can edit the dates and times for a group with the override on. | | Which rule applies to a product | Can lock it per venue permission group, using **Can change price rules on HQ products** | Can choose, unless HQ has locked it. When it's locked, you see the name of the rule HQ assigned instead of the **Price rule** drop-down. | | Local price rules on local products | Not applicable | Can create and manage them | **Custom date groups** (like school or public holidays) in a time-based price rule allow managed venues to adjust schedule dates only when HQ explicitly enables the **Allow managed venues to override** setting. If HQ disables this later, the original HQ dates overwrite any venue-level edits. See [Create a time-based price rule](/v1/docs/create-a-time-based-price-rule). ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/23700755-951c-4b69-8afe-ec8b33c6c689/Images/Documentation/image(64).png) **Finding HQ rules:** HQ-created price rules appear in a managed venue's rule list with an **HQ** label. From Venue Manager, go to **Products > Price rules > All rules.** ## FAQs **Can I apply two price rules to the same product?** No. A product uses one rule at a time. **Can I change a rule's tiers while it's applied to a product?** You can change tier prices for a product at any time. To change the rule's own tiers, schedules or lead times, unlink the rule from every product using it first. **Do price rule changes affect bookings already taken?** No. Changes to a rule or its prices apply to new bookings. Bookings already taken keep the price they were sold at. **How do price rules interact with multi-pass products?** You cannot attach a price rule to a multi-pass product itself. Additionally, when a guest redeems a multi-pass for a session, the pass covers the full cost of that visit. They will not be charged any extra fees, even if the session has reached a higher pricing tier due to a capacity-based or time-based rule. **Do price rules apply when a guest uses a membership?** It depends on the type of membership benefit being used: - **Included passes (entitlements):** No. When a member redeems a fully pre-paid pass included in their membership, they are simply drawing down an existing entitlement. There is no new transaction, so price rules do not apply. - **Membership discounts:** Yes. If a membership gives a guest a discount on a new purchase (eg 20% off standard passes), the price rule adjusts the product's base price first. The membership discount is then calculated on top of that new adjusted price. **Can guests use a discount code on a product that has a price rule applied?** Yes, price rules and discount codes can be used together. The price rule automatically adjusts the product's base price first (for example, applying a cheaper off-peak rate). If a guest or staff member applies a valid discount code at checkout, that discount is calculated on top of the newly adjusted base price. **How are price rules different from discount codes?** Price rules are automated and ongoing. They adjust a product's base price automatically based on conditions you set (like time, day, or group size). Discount codes are tactical and short-term—they require a guest or staff member to manually apply a code at checkout, typically for specific marketing campaigns or promotions. ## Related - [Get started with price rules](/get-started-with-price-rules.md) - [Apply a price rule to products](/apply-a-price-rule-to-products-and-set-prices.md) - [Which sales channels a price rule applies to](/price-rules-sales-channels.md)
