Use this guide to check channel coverage before building a rule, and to understand how prices behave when bookings are modified. ## Which channels each rule type prices | Sales channel | Quantity-based | Time-based | Early bird | Capacity-based (beta) | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Progressive (online) checkout (and API) | Automatic | Automatic | Automatic | Your choice | | POS | Automatic | Automatic | Automatic | Your choice | | Venue Manager | Automatic | Automatic | Automatic | Your choice | | Legacy checkout | Standard price | Standard price | Standard price | Standard price | | Self-serve kiosks | Standard price | Standard price | Standard price | Standard price | - **Automatic:** The rule applies across Online checkout, POS, and Venue Manager with no extra channel setup required. - **Your choice:** Selected manually per rule. Channels left unselected charge the product's base price. - **Standard rate:** The channel charges the product's standard non-tiered price. Guests can still book, but tier discounts are ignored. ## Choosing channels for a capacity-based rule Capacity-based rules are the exception. When you create one, you select which channels the tiers price on, under **Sales channels**: - Progressive Checkout & API - Point of Sale - Venue Manager Select at least one. Any unselected channel charges the product's standard base price regardless of session capacity. ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/23700755-951c-4b69-8afe-ec8b33c6c689/Images/Documentation/image(82).png) > [!NOTE] > The base price is what makes this work. You set it in the variations table alongside the tier prices, so every channel has a price to fall back on. See [Create a capacity-based price rule](/v1/docs/create-a-capacity-based-price-rule). ## What a guest pays when a booking changes When a booking is modified after purchase (eg rescheduling or adding tickets), price adjustments depend on the rule type: | Rule type | Tickets added or removed | Booking moved to a new date or time | | --- | --- | --- | | Quantity-based | Moves to the tier matching the new total quantity | No change (quantity rules count tickets, not dates) | | Time-based | Added tickets price at the tier for that session | Moves to the tier for the new date or session time | | Early bird | Added tickets price at the original locked rate | Retains the rate from the original booking date | | Capacity-based (beta) | Added tickets price at the original locked rate | Retains the price the booking was originally sold at | ### Important rules for modifications - **Channel consistency:** These rules apply identically whether the change is made by a guest in online accounts or by staff at POS/Venue Manager. - **Rule updates vs. booking updates:** Editing a price rule or tier price in Venue Manager affects **new bookings only**. Bookings already completed retain the price at which they were sold. ## FAQs **Can I run a price rule online but not at the counter?** On a capacity-based rule, yes. Deselect **Point of Sale** under **Sales channels**, and POS will charge the standard base price. For all other rule types, channel coverage is automatic; to keep counter prices separate, use a dedicated product. **Why is a guest at the kiosk paying a different price?** Self-serve kiosks and legacy checkouts do not support price rules. They charge the product's standard rate, ignoring tier discounts applied online. **Does the API follow price rules?** Yes. The API mirrors the progressive online checkout and respects the same channel selections configured for capacity-based rules. **A guest added tickets to a booking and the price didn't change. Why?** Early bird and capacity-based rules lock the original booking price by design. For quantity-based rules, added tickets must be for the same session to combine toward a quantity tier. ## Related - [Why didn't my price rule charge the price I expected?](/why-did-a-guest-pay-a-different-price.md) - [Create a capacity-based price rule (beta)](/create-a-capacity-based-price-rule.md) - [How price rules work with different product types](/price-rules-product-types.md) - [Manage checkout display settings for price rules](/price-rules-checkout-display.md)
