# SKU retail barcode scanning

SKU retail barcode scanning allows you to catalog food and beverage item barcodes in ROLLER and staff can scan those items directly into POS for fast-tracked sales processing. Using SKU scanning also reduces the need to have every stock item uploaded into the POS menu tabs.

> [!NOTE]
> SKU scanning can only be used in conjunction with stock items.

## Add barcodes to stock in Venue Manager

- Create the [stock item](/v1/docs/create-your-stock-products)
- Select the more button for each variety to expand the additional setting options
- Scroll down to assign a **Barcode ID** to each variety by either scanning the Barcode ID directly into the text box or type it in manually. ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/23700755-951c-4b69-8afe-ec8b33c6c689/Images/Documentation/8334715505039.png)

> [!WARNING]
> Barcode IDs must be unique and are case sensitive, any letters contained in the barcode ID **must be** lowercase.

## Scan barcodes in POS

After you've assigned **Barcode IDs** to your stock items, you then have the ability to scan these through the POS.

To add a barcoded stock item to a guest's cart, simply select any menu on the left-hand navigation and scan the barcode.

> [!WARNING]
> For this functionality to work you must scan from within a POS menu tab. If you scan from within the bookings search menu it will not work.
