Manage group orders using the split tabs view in POS. Staff can create additional tabs, rename them for guests, move items between tabs, see a running total for each tab, and take payments separately.
This makes it easier to manage group orders while keeping everything under the same booking for reporting.
This item is currently in Beta, and you can opt in to use it in POS settings. Read the guide to learn how to set up and use split tabs.
Before you start
Make sure that you:
- Understand how your team currently handles group orders and payments and train staff on when to use split tabs or standard tabs.
- Decide how your team will name tabs (eg guest name or group reference).
How it works
Tab splits in ROLLER follow this workflow:
- Enable split tabs in POS settings (to opt into the open beta).
- Add items to the booking at POS or open an existing booking.
- Open the split tab view to move items between tabs by guest.
- Each tab represents a guest (or group) within the booking.
- Unpaid items can be moved between tabs at any time and shows a running total.
- Discounts continue to apply based on the items in each tab.
- Guests can pay for each tab split and the booking remains a single booking for reporting.
To opt into the split tabs open beta for your venue:
- Go to Apps and select Point of sale and Settings.
- Under the Tabs section, select the checkbox for Enable split tabs.
- Select Save.
Create a new tab, and use the split tab view to create new tabs, move items between tabs and take payments for individual tabs:
- From POS, add items to the cart.
- Select Add to tab and choose an existing tab or select Create tab. Enter a tab reference or guest name.
- Alternatively, open an existing booking with items added.
- Select Split tabs to enter the split tab view.
- Select Add new tab to create additional tabs.
- Select the options menu (3 dots) on a tab and select Edit details. Enter a tab name or reference and select Save.
- Select one or more items in a tab. Select New tab or Move to to move the selected items to another tab. Note: some items (for example, party packages and gift cards) aren't supported with split tabs. See the FAQs below for more details.
- If a guest wants to add items to their tab during the visit, select Add items.
- Select items from the POS menu and select Continue.
- Review each tab's items and totals, which update automatically as items are added, moved between tabs or removed. Discounts also update as items are added or moved between tabs — see the FAQs below for more details about how different discount types behave.
- When a guest wants to settle a tab, select Pay $X on a tab.
- Complete the payment for that tab and select Done.
- Continue managing or paying other tabs as needed.
- Select X to return to the main booking screen.
FAQs
Card pre-authorization can be attached to the initial tab, but subsequent tabs created from a booking in the tab split view can't be created with a card attached. Guests can still settle the tab with a card.
Stock items, session passes, regular passes, and regular add-ons can all be split across tabs. Items added from the booking page are automatically placed on the first tab. Items added directly from within a tab are added to that tab. If an item doesn't show a checkbox in the split tab view, it can't be moved between tabs.
Discounts display clearly for each tab split. When a discount is applied, it's labelled below each item it's connected to.
Here's how different discount types work with split tabs and how they affect the tab calculation:
- Percentage discounts (all items): applies to all eligible items in the booking. When items move between tabs, the discount follows the item and each tab total updates automatically.
- Product-specific percentage discounts: applies only to certain items (eg burgers only). If items are moved between tabs, the discount continues to apply to eligible items in each tab.
- Flat amount discounts (per item): applies a fixed discount to each eligible item (eg $2 off a burger). The discount stays with the item if it is moved between tabs.
- Flat price discounts: overrides the item price (eg burger becomes $1). The discounted price stays with the item regardless of which tab it is moved to.
- Quantity-based discounts: applies to a limited number of eligible items (eg 10% off 2 pizzas). The discount is recalculated based on how many eligible items are in each tab, and limits still apply.
- Custom amount discounts: a manual discount (eg $5 off) applied by staff. This stays on the tab it was applied to and does not automatically move or split across other tabs.
- Promotion discounts (eg buy 1 get 1): requires specific items to be grouped together. If items are split across tabs, the promotion no longer applies and the discount amount is removed. If the item is re-added to the tab the discount amount is applied again.
No. Split tabs let you manage group payments within a single booking. Each tab represents a guest or group, but everything stays under one booking for reporting.
The items move to the selected tab and totals update automatically. Any applicable discounts will recalculate based on the items in each tab.
Some discounts require specific items to be grouped together to apply. Promotion discounts like buy one get one are removed if the required items are split across different tabs. If you move the item back to the same tab as the other required items, the discount is applied again.
Items that have already been paid or partially paid are locked to their tab and can't be moved. If an item doesn't have a checkbox next to it in the split tab view, it either falls into a product type that doesn't support splitting — such as packages, gift cards, wallets, and tips — or it doesn't meet the conditions required to split (for example, items that are part of a package, or items with a required group size greater than one).
Yes. Select Add items on the tab you want, then choose items from the POS menu. The items will be added directly to that tab.
Yes. Open the options menu (3 dots) on the tab, select Edit details, and update the tab name or reference.
Some discounts (like buy 1 get 1 offers) require specific items to stay together. If items are split across tabs, the discount may no longer show unless the items are on the same tab again.
