Time-based price rules let you set different prices for weekdays, weekends, peak/off-peak hours and custom periods such as school breaks or holidays.
Prices automatically display the adjusted prices for guests in online checkouts and for staff at POS and Venue Manager, based on the set time periods. This eliminates the need for duplicate products and complex schedules, streamlining your operations and maximizing revenue by aligning prices with demand.
Simplify pricing and maximize revenue
With time-based price rules, you can adjust pricing for peak, off-peak and shoulder periods (ie times between peak and off-peak, such as early mornings or weekday afternoons).
- Set a weekday price to encourage more visitors when it’s quieter (off-peak).
- Increase pricing for weekends when demand is higher (peak).
- Charge a higher price during holidays to maximize revenue.
For example, you might set a 60-minute Adult session pass ticket at:
- $20 on weekdays to boost attendance
- $22 on weekends (Friday 3 PM – Sunday) to match peak demand
- $25 during holiday periods (eg March 1 – March 16)
Once the time-based price rule is set up and linked to a product, prices update automatically across sales channels based on the guest’s selected day or time.
Select the tabs to see how the ticket pricing automatically adjusts based on the day or date selected for the same product during online checkout.
Key considerations
- Price rules can be applied to session and standard pass products.
- A product can use quantity-based or time-based price rules, but not both simultaneously.
- You can apply the same price rule to multiple products.
- Price rules don't apply to passes used in package products. The package product ignores the price rule and uses the defined package pricing instead.
- Price rules can't be applied to ticket variations using consecutive sessions (eg reduced price when guests book back-to-back sessions) or group tickets (eg admit 4)
- Self-serve kiosks and legacy checkouts do not currently support price rules.
How time-based price rules work
- Create a price rule with time-based tiers for specific days and date ranges. These can include regular scheduled days and times (eg weekdays, weekends, and Fridays after 3 PM) and custom periods (eg holidays, school breaks) when different pricing applies.
- Apply the time-based price rule to a session or standard pass product in its settings, then enter the price per tier for each ticket variation.
Step 1: Create a time-based price rule
- From Venue Manager, go to Products > Create price rule.
- Select Time-based pricing to customize the price rule settings.
- Enter a name (eg Weekend & holiday prices) for the price rule.
- Set up the time-based pricing tiers:
- Base tier: Price currently set in product settings.
- Select Add pricing tier to create time-based pricing tiers (eg Weekend price, Holiday price).
- Assign time-based price rule schedules for recurring pricing adjustments, such as weekdays and weekends.
- Default: All days use the base tier (standard price set up in product settings).
- To adjust specific days, select a different time-based pricing tier from the drop-down for the relevant days (eg Weekend price for Saturdays and Sundays).
- Use Set override times for custom hours (eg Weekend price for Fridays 3 PM – 10 PM). In this example shown, the weekend price will apply from 3 PM Friday to Sunday.
- Define custom date price rules to override regularly occurring pricing tier schedules for tiers on specific dates for holidays, school breaks or special events.
- Example: Set holiday price for March 1 to March 16.
- Select Edit tier schedule, choose the default pricing tier (eg holiday price).
- Select the custom date or date range from the calendar.
- To add more date ranges, select the + icon next to the calendar.
- Choose which price tier you want for each day (eg base price for Mondays and Tuesdays and holiday price Wednesday through Sunday for the custom date range). These prices override the pricing tier schedules for the selected date or date range.
-
Save the custom date group schedule.
- Save the time-based price rule.
Step 2: Apply the price rule to a product and set the prices per tier
- From Venue Manager, go to Products > All products.
- Select a session pass or standard pass product to open its settings.
- Scroll to Session pass/Standard pass details.
- Select the time-based price rule you want from the Price rule drop-down. Note that you'll need to select Fixed price to remove a price rule.
- The variations table now includes columns for the time-based tiers configured for the selected price rule.
- Enter prices for each ticket variation per time-based tier.
- Select Save.
Automated price updates across sales channels
Once the price rule is added to a product, ROLLER automatically applies the pricing set based on date, day or times when:
- Guests purchase tickets through online checkouts
- Staff sell tickets from POS
- Staff create bookings in Venue Manager
Confirm pricing updates
To check that the pricing updates for the product, go through the process of selecting the product in an online checkout.
If the pricing isn’t displaying correctly, confirm:
- Price rule tiers, schedules and custom date periods are set correctly for the selected days, dates and times.
From Venue Manager, go to Products > Price rules and select the time-based price rule to review its settings.
- The price rule is assigned to the product in its settings and pricing set per tier is correct.
- From Venue Manager, go to Products > All products.
- Select the product to open its settings.
- Scroll to Session/Standard pass details, then check that the correct price rule is selected in the Price rules drop-down.
- Check the pricing set per tier in the ticket variations table in the product's settings.
Edit a time-based price rule
You can’t edit tiers once they’re added to a product, but you can update other price rule settings.
- From Venue Manager, go to Products > Price rules.
- All existing price rules are listed.
- Select the options menu (3 dots) for a price rule to View price rule (& edit).
- Update the price rule as allowed.
To edit tiers:
- You’ll need to remove the price rule from all products using it before making changes.
- In each product’s settings, select Fixed price rule to switch to the standard product pricing (or choose another price rule).
- Once the price rule is no longer assigned to any product, you can edit its tiers.
Delete a price rule
You can’t delete a price rule while it’s assigned to a product. First, remove it from all products using it in their settings by selecting Fixed price rules.
To delete a price rule:
- From Venue Manager, go to Products > Price rules.
- All existing price rules are listed.
- Select the options menu (3 dots), then select Delete price rule (must not be assigned to any product).
FAQs
How are price rules different from discounts?
- Price rules: Automated, long-term pricing adjustments to optimize revenue.
- Discounts: Short-term reductions for promotions or special offers.
What products support price rules?
- Session passes
- Standard passes
Do price rules apply to session passes in packages?
No. Packages ignore price rules applied to session pass products that are used in package products. They use the package product pricing instead.
How do product schedules differ from price rules?
Schedules and price rules work independently but complement each other.
- Product schedules determine when a product is available for guests to book, such as daily from open to close.
- Price rules set the cost based on timing, such as charging $40 on weekends and $35 on weekdays for the same product.
