Enable Apple Pay on the overlay checkout

Prev Next

Improve your guest checkout experience by offering Apple Pay as a fast, secure payment option.

This guide shows you how to enable Apple Pay on your overlay checkout and verify it’s working correctly.

Apple Pay is currently supported on the overlay checkout experience for venues using progressive checkouts and ROLLER Payments.

Before you start

Before you start, make sure you have:

  • Set up your progressive checkout.

  • Added the overlay checkout added to your website.

  • Access to your website hosting (or a web developer who can upload files).

  • Apple Pay enabled with Adyen (your payment partner).

If your checkout runs on a ROLLER custom domain (eg tickets.yourvenue.com) rather than embedded on your own site, the Apple Pay setup is slightly different. See the instructions for Configure Apple Pay for custom domains instead.

How Apple Pay works with the overlay checkout

Apple Pay requires a domain association file to confirm your website domain is authorized to display Apple Pay.

This file must:

  • Be uploaded to your website under the .well-known directory.

  • Be publicly accessible.

  • Be whitelisted by Adyen before Apple Pay will appear.

Apple Pay will not display until this process is complete.

Request your domain association file

To enable Apple Pay:

  1. Contact the support team to request your Apple Pay domain association file. The file is supplied by Adyen and sent to you by the ROLLER support team. Alternatively, you can access the most recent version of this file on Adyen’s website.

  2. Upload the file to your website under the .well-known directory.

  3. Let the ROLLER support team know once the file has been uploaded.

  4. The support team will coordinate with Adyen to whitelist your domain.

Once your domain is whitelisted by Adyen, Apple Pay will become available on your overlay checkout.

Ensure your domain association file is in the correct location

Incorrect placement of the .well-known folder is a common cause of Apple Pay not appearing.

If your checkout is launched from a subdirectory (eg. example.com/location-name), ensure the domain association file is accessible relative to the domain structure being used.

For example:

  • If your checkout runs under example.com, the file must sit correctly under that root domain.

  • If your website uses subdirectories, confirm the file is still accessible at the required .well-known path.

If unsure, please ask your web developer to confirm the file location.

Verify your domain setup

After uploading the file:

  1. Open the file URL directly in a browser.

  2. Confirm the file loads without redirect.
Confirm the content type is text/plain.

Then notify the support team so they can confirm whitelisting with Adyen. Apple Pay will not appear until whitelisting is complete.

Add Apple Pay as a payment method

Ensure that Apple Pay is available as a checkout payment method in payment settings.

List of payment methods with Apple Pay highlighted as pending option.

Learn how to do this task in the guide Add payment methods with ROLLER Payments.

Test Apple Pay

Apple Pay will only display when:

  • You are using a supported Apple device.

  • You are using Safari.

  • Apple Pay is set up on the device as a payment method.

  • Your domain has been successfully whitelisted.

If all requirements are met, Apple Pay will appear as a payment option on your overlay checkout

Troubleshooting Apple Pay on overlay checkout

If Apple Pay is not showing, check the following:

  • The domain association file is uploaded under .well-known.

  • The file is publicly accessible.

  • The file loads without redirect.

  • The content type is text/plain.

  • Apple Pay is enabled in Adyen.

  • You are testing on a supported Apple device using Safari.

  • The support team has confirmed your domain is whitelisted.

If Apple Pay does not appear after checking the above steps, contact the ROLLER support team.
