When tax for a product looks wrong at checkout, it's often tied to the Tax & Fees or Product settings in Venue Manager. This guide walks through the most common reasons tax displays incorrectly and how to resolve each one, so your prices and receipts show the expected tax rates.
Common causes
The most common causes for tax displaying incorrectly on products include the following:
The default tax rate is set incorrectly
A tax rate was changed, but the update only applied to new products
A product has a tax override set on one of its variations
A product uses tax-inclusive pricing where you expected tax-exclusive or vice-versa
A gift card, cashless card or wallet is applying 0% tax
Solution
Confirm your default tax rate for all products in Venue Manager, then review product settings for each of the following common causes as a troubleshooting guide.
Since your products may have a number of unique settings and dependencies, check each scenario to see if it applies to your products.
You'll need the Can access account details permission to open the Tax & fees page, and Can edit tax settings to add or edit rates and override tax on individual products.
Confirm your default tax rate
From Venue Manager, go to Settings > Account > Tax & fees.
Check your rates, including which one is set as the default.
Update products created before a rate change
From Venue Manager, go to Products > All products.
Select the product you want to update.
Confirm the product is using the correct tax rate. If a Tax override is set on a variation, update it to the rate you need.
Select Save.
Check for a product-level tax override
From Venue Manager, go to Products > All products.
Select the options menu (3 dots) on the variation.
Select Edit variation.
Under Advanced options, review the Tax override. Clear it to use the default, or set the rate you need.
Check tax-inclusive vs tax-exclusive
From Venue Manager, go to Settings > Account > Tax & fees.
Confirm whether prices include or exclude tax, and remember this can be overridden on individual products.
Check for automatic 0% rates
Gift cards, cashless cards and wallets apply 0% tax automatically when a 0% rate exists in the Tax table, which is expected and prevents guests being taxed twice.
