Credit card tokenization is a process that substitutes a guest's sensitive cardholder data with a randomly generated number. This substituted number is known as the token. ROLLER Payments holds the sensitive card data and the token is used to identify that card when attempting to process a payment.
This is expected behavior and part of standard payment security. Tokenization does not indicate an error or issue with the payment.
The card number change isn’t controlled or generated by ROLLER. This comes from the guest's bank or digital wallet provider as part of their security and tokenization process.
ROLLER simply receives the payment confirmation from the processor once the transaction is approved.
Why a guest’s card may appear tokenized
A guest’s card may show a different number due to common security practices, including:
- Digital wallets: Apple Pay, Google Pay or other digital wallets generate a virtual card number for added security. The venue via ROLLER (merchant) sees this virtual number, not the actual card number.
- Corporate or shared cards: In some business or organizational setups, transactions may be routed through shared or department-level card numbers.
- Virtual cards: Some banks or services issue virtual card numbers for online purchases or added security. These also appear differently on receipts or statements.
- Card replacement: If the card was recently replaced or updated, the number may not match previous transactions still processing under the old number.
